Highlights from my road trip and Thanksgiving
~Drove to Missouri in 16 hours.
~Hit rush hour traffic in Austin and Dallas.
~Passed the Museaum of Horrors in Ross, Texas.
~Stopped in West, Texas for kalache’s.
~Drove up scenic Hwy 7 in Arkansas
-This is the most insanely treacherous road ever paved. It passes through like a gazillion national forests and the scenery is beautiful…or so I hear. You can’t actually enjoy the scenery because you’re too worried about FALLING OFF THE FUCKING ROAD. The rumble strip is in the CENTER of the road and there is no shoulder; just a white line painted onto a crumbling cliff. I actually saw somewhere that this road is “not a highway, it’s a destination.” Fuck you, it’s a deathtrap.
~Passed a strip club in Hot Springs, Arkansas that advertised nude karaoke.
~Saw my mom sing with Ray Stevens at his theatre in Branson Mo.
~Dressed up as a Motown singer with my dad to help my mom visualize a project. Hair and all people, hair and all. You will never see the pictures of this, so don’t ask.
~Visited a fish hatchery. Actually pretty cool in a weird kind of way.
~Relaxed in my parents hot tub for two days.
~Drove home through Oklahoma instead of Arkansas. I absolutely cannot stand this state; I hate everything about it from the roads to the bland scenery to the way the word sounds. I honest to god hate okla-fucking-homa.
~Stopped in a small town in Texas to eat dinner on the way home. While sitting in the restaurant we realized that crazy people surrounded us.
Jenn – “Ever feel like your in a Stephen King novel?”
Bear – “Yeah, lets get out of here!”
Then as we are leaving said town a radio announcement states that traffic is backed up due to a car accident on Deathsaw and Slaughter Roads. WTF! I did not just hear that. “Bear, get us the fuck out of here, NOW!”
~Brother-in-law and his family came to visit for Thanksgiving the day after we arrived home.
~Stayed up late helping/watching the Bear and Brother-in-law make pies and other sweet treats for Thanksgiving dinner the next day.
~Went to the in-laws house for Thanksgiving and ate entirely too much.
~Realized how much I actually enjoy being around the Bears family now. The make my family seem normal
~Decided my Brother-in-law wasn’t quite the asshole I had made him out to be.
~Watched pay-per-view UFC with the Bear, Brother-in-Law and Father-in-Law.
~After three days of turkey salad sandwiches decided I hate said sandwiches. Sticking to ham and cheese from now on.
~Took a ton of pictures of all this…mysteriously lost at least half of them.
~Decorated for Christmas…thank god no one witnessed that occasion.

RHSP-It's a BLAH that I'm hoping to overcome before it becomes a BLEAH. :P
Kate-I guess I can be grateful that my Thanksgiving was not as bad as yours. I'm very glad that you are feeling better.
Wow, you gave good ol' Arkansas a tongue lashin', didn't you?
Until my husband got transferred to Hot Springs three years ago, I thought Arkansas was mostly about huntin' and fishin' and the wonderful outdoor life. But that's only the beginning!
We were pleasantly surprised by the wealth of hidden gems here in our new home town. For example, as professional cellist who used to live only three hours away, I was shocked to learn of the first-rate Hot Springs Music Festival, an annual event that attracts 200 pre-professional classical and jazz musicians from around the world.
(Note: Although I am a travel writer and public relations professional, I am not paid to promote our city nor any of the properties or events I've listed. These are just our personal favorites!)
Ours is a unique demographic here in Hot Springs, where the median age is 42. A healthy percentage of us have incomes of $100K or more, and we support 12 championship golf courses and 27 non-profit organizations directly related to the visual and performing arts. Having hosted a Historic District Gallery Walk the first Friday of each month for nearly 16 years, Hot Springs was recently named #4 Art Town in America.
There are definitely other great things to do in addition to the Hot Springs Music Festival, held the first two weeks of June each year. Early September brings the annual Bluesfest and Hot Springs Jazzfest.
By late October, the city swells with nearly 20,000 people for the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, one of four preliminary sites for the Academy Awards in the documentary category.
From January through April, hotels and restaurants are booming with racing fans at Oaklawn Jockey Club, a 102-year-old thoroughbred racetrack.
Cradled by the Ouachita Mountains, three pristine lakes lure the likes of FLW Bass Fishing Championships. a breathtaking bounty of botanical beauty known as Garvan Woodland Gardens. is located on a 210-acre peninsula of Lake Hamilton.
Our particularly outstanding accommodations include Lookout Point Lakeside Inn, one of only three Arkansas inns listed on the Select Registry. Many folks enjoy the convenience of Embassy Suites Hot Springs, an all suite hotel adjacent to Summit Arena, was ranked #1 Embassy Suites worldwide for 2004. You'll find adult locals politely congregating in the atrium around the piano bar during happy hour.
Looking for lunch? For eclectic urban cuisine, check out the award-winning Cafe 1217, recently featured as one of the best deli's in the country on The Food Network!
Best of all, Hot Springs is packed with people who understand hospitality. Sure, we have attractions. But without the people who live here, we'd be a ghost town instead of a resort town.
Local people. Local events. Hot Springs' REAL attraction.
Come see us again!
